Education

Switzerland can bring AI into schools with care, from basic AI literacy to human-AI co-thinking. AI Swiss offers an approach and a white paper to teachers, pupils and institutions.

Co-thinking, a skill for school

Co-thinking is the ability to work intellectually with AI while keeping human oversight. The AI suggests; the pupil rephrases, questions or challenges. Pupils shape the dialogue instead of receiving ready-made answers.

This practice builds metacognition: understanding one’s own thinking in the face of answers produced by a machine. Pupils learn to spot inconsistencies, detect bias and judge an idea by its logic, its ethics and its relevance.

The aim is to stay intellectually present and not defer to the machine. Treating AI as a thinking partner gives pupils more agency and responsibility.

The white paper

“Human-AI Co-Thinking: Transforming Swiss Education” describes this approach for schools: AI literacy, co-thinking and the role of teachers. It is available in English, French and German.

AI literacy, a skill for every pupil

  • Understand how AI answers

Knowing how to use a tool is not enough. Pupils learn how an AI system produces an answer, where it can go wrong and what it can do. Its logic, its patterns and its blind spots become visible.

  • Think instead of copying

A dialogue with AI means refining the request, spotting inconsistencies, questioning answers and judging for oneself. AI then serves to deepen learning.

  • In every subject

Analysing historical sources, writing a story, exploring biology: AI can open new leads and perspectives. Every pupil should be able to learn this skill, whatever their background.

Teachers at the centre

AI changes teaching: it now also means guiding collaboration between humans and AI, critical thinking and ethics. Teachers need support and tools that respect their role.

  • Design learning with AI

Lessons in which AI supports pupils’ thinking call for new practices: asking the right questions, then guiding pupils as they reflect on their work.

  • Learn step by step

Professional development should be practical, modular and close to classroom reality. It starts with small trials and is learned by doing, without technical jargon.

  • New roles

Facilitating co-thinking, designing augmented learning, guiding digital ethics: AI opens new roles in the profession.

  • Less administration

Used well, AI can lighten some administrative tasks and leave more time for relationships with pupils, mentoring and creativity.
