When Democracy Meets Science: Can AI Help Debug Society?
Written the day after the 2024 US election, the essay argues that complex societal problems need evidence-based approaches, and that AI can help as a tool that augments human judgement without replacing it.
This article is more than a year old. Some of its findings may have changed since.
Reflecting on how empirical facts become talking points and why we need evidence-based approaches to navigate complex societal challenges
And with the Democrats' loss in the US, we are reminded once again that democracy can send us backwards when empirical facts become mere talking points...
The Complexity Challenge
Our society faces challenges that demand complex innovative solutions that the monkey part of our brain cannot deliver—and perhaps the rest too. From preserving biodiversity to reforming healthcare and streamlining regulatory frameworks that grow without a garbage collector, we need evidence-based approaches more than ever.
The Scientific Method Under Siege
Thank goodness a minority still remembers what the scientific method is, and understands the consequences of publishing articles with little to no expertise. In an era where expertise is often dismissed and empirical evidence is treated as just another opinion, the rigorous pursuit of truth through scientific inquiry becomes both more precious and more precarious.
When empirical facts become mere talking points, democracy risks becoming a popularity contest rather than a search for effective solutions.
AI Joins Team Science
And thank goodness we have AI joining Team Science to help us navigate through the complexity and noise. While human cognitive biases and political pressures can distort our understanding of complex issues, AI systems can process vast amounts of data, identify patterns, and help us maintain focus on evidence-based solutions.
This doesn't mean AI is infallible or should replace human judgment. Rather, it offers tools to augment our analytical capabilities, helping us cut through the noise of political rhetoric to focus on what the data actually tells us about effective policy solutions.
Debugging Society
Maybe we can still debug society after all. Just as software engineers systematically identify and fix bugs in complex systems, we need to approach societal problems with the same methodical, evidence-based mindset. This means:
- Identifying root causes: Moving beyond symptoms to understand underlying systemic issues
- Testing solutions: Implementing evidence-based policies with measurable outcomes
- Iterating based on results: Adjusting approaches based on empirical feedback rather than ideological preferences
- Scaling what works: Expanding successful interventions while discontinuing failed approaches
The challenge isn't technical—it's cultural. We need to rebuild respect for expertise, evidence, and the scientific method in public discourse. Only then can we hope to address the complex challenges facing our interconnected world.
