Are we stuck again in the "Swiss-Made" comfort zone with AI?
The “Swiss-made” label and data sovereignty claims can stop critical assessment of AI tools, many of which are local hosting of international solutions. The essay asks decision makers to judge tools on their capabilities and to focus resources on real problems.
This article is more than a year old. Some of its findings may have changed since.
The stakes in AI are too high for simplified decision-making. Our strength lies in innovation, not isolation.
When faced with complex choices, our brains often default to simpler decision making. This tendency is particularly visible in how we evaluate AI solutions in Switzerland today.
The mere mention of "local" in AI tools stimulates our Swiss reward centers and parietal lobes, triggering an almost instinctive positive response. We see terms like "data sovereignty" and "renewable energy usage" – crowned with the powerful "Swiss-made" label – and often stop critically assessing actual advantages or limitations.
The stakes in AI are too high for such simplified decision-making. Looking beyond cognitive biases, the current landscape reveals an uncomfortable truth: most AI tools from traditional big Swiss players are local hosting of international solutions, offering little technical innovation or functional differentiation – at best.
Let's be honest:
- Generative AI models have become basic infrastructure, like databases
- Data sovereignty concerns are no different for AI than for databases
- Local hosting alone doesn't guarantee better security or performance
We're paying a hidden cost:
Every resource invested in rebuilding existing AI infrastructure is diverted from:
- Solving real Swiss industry challenges
- Developing innovative applications
- Creating genuine competitive advantages
We must demand more. Organizations need to:
- Look beyond the "Swiss-made" label
- Assess solutions based on actual capabilities
- Consider global alternatives objectively
- Focus on real-world impact
Innovation Over Isolation
To the decision makers that hold our future in their hands: our strength lies in innovation, not isolation. Let's stop rebuilding the wheel every time and instead focus our exceptional resources on solving real problems that matter to society.
The global AI race won't pause while we recreate foundation layers and infrastructure as a service. It's time to leverage existing tools like we do for chips and operating systems, and focus on building what's next. And yes, your server can still be in Switzerland.
